Some materials carry memory. Damascus steel is one of them, a metal once folded into Samurai blades, prized for a strength that seemed almost mythical. Franck Muller has taken that legacy and turned it towards the wrist.

The result is the Vanguard Damascus collection: two timepieces built from a material with a history far older than watchmaking itself.

Where the Story Begins

Damascus steel traces its roots to the ancient city that gave it its name, where blacksmiths forged blades recognised for their strength and their unmistakable, rippling patterns.

Franck Muller’s version is thoroughly modern. Crafted from austenitic, non-magnetic stainless steel, it is built through a patented process layering two different steel powders together resulting in a material that is durable, pure, and engineered to let the movement run undisturbed.

A Pattern That Belongs to No One Else

What follows is where the House’s process becomes almost alchemical. Each case and dial is immersed in an acid bath, ten minutes for the case, five for the dial, coaxing the steel’s layered structure to the surface. No two emerge the same. The patterns that appear are entirely the material’s own, making every Vanguard Damascus a singular object rather than one of a series.

The collection takes two forms. The three-hand Vanguard Damascus keeps things classic, its dial a quiet canvas for the steel’s natural artistry. The Vanguard Damascus Racing pushes further, openworked to reveal an intricate architecture within—numerals cut directly from Damascus steel, a skeletonised date disc, and a 60-second counter at its heart. Both are finished with a black grosgrain leather strap and a buckle, fittingly, forged from Damascus steel itself.

Mastery, Kept In-House

This entire transformation, from raw alloy to individual pattern, is mastered entirely within Franck Muller’s own walls at Watchland, its Geneva manufacture. It’s a fitting continuation for a House built on proprietary technical innovation, now applied to a material with a history stretching back centuries.

Summary

Franck Muller’s Vanguard Damascus Honours an Ancient Craft

  • Franck Muller launches the Vanguard Damascus collection, drawing on the legendary strength and patterns of Damascus steel — famed since antiquity for forging Samurai blades — to create two watches, the classic Vanguard Damascus and the openworked Vanguard Damascus Racing, each with a one-of-a-kind pattern revealed through an in-house acid-bath process at the brand's Geneva manufacture, Watchland.
