There is a brief moment at dusk when colours begin to soften and sharp edges quietly disappear into shadow. It is this quiet transition… not quite day, not quite night… that inspires the Vanguard Sfumato Slim, a timepiece that reflects Franck Muller’s longstanding willingness to approach watchmaking through an artistic lens.
The Vanguard Sfumato Slim is easy to admire at first glance, but it rewards a second look. The more time spent with the dial, the more its colours seem to shift with the changing light, revealing subtle transitions that are difficult to capture in a single image.
Presented at the 2025 World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie, the collection draws inspiration from a fleeting moment of transition, when daylight begins to soften and the horizon dissolves into shadow. Rather than pursuing visual intensity, the watch explores something quieter: atmosphere.
That idea is most clearly expressed through the dial. Inspired by the Renaissance painting technique known as sfumato, where colours blend without visible boundaries, its sunray-brushed surface is built through successive layers of lacquer that gradually deepen towards the edge. The effect is subtle rather than immediate. As the light changes, so does the dial.
The decision to replace Franck Muller’s signature Arabic numerals with restrained indexes reinforces that same philosophy. Nothing feels excessive. Every element allows the gradient itself to become the focal point.
The case follows a similarly measured approach. Measuring just 9.1 mm in thickness, the familiar Vanguard silhouette takes on a noticeably slimmer profile while preserving its distinctive architecture. Crafted in rose gold or stainless steel, it is paired with an integrated leather strap secured through concealed screws, creating an uninterrupted visual flow from case to wrist.
Viewed through the open caseback, the automatic Calibre FM 708-S6 reveals another layer of the watch’s character. Decorated by hand and offering a 42-hour power reserve, it serves as a reminder that Franck Muller’s longstanding commitment to mechanical craftsmanship remains central to the collection.
The Vanguard Sfumato Slim does not abandon the bold spirit that has long defined the Maison. Instead, it expresses that confidence differently. Here, complexity gives way to clarity, and spectacle yields to subtlety. In the end, it is the quietest details that linger longest.
