Guided by the tranquil colours of the Swiss Jura, the Ateliers de l’Extraordinaire seamlessly fuses its modern technology and visionary outlook with the trailblazing elements of the original Piaget Polo. In doing so, the Maison once again bridges past and present, weaving a contemporary narrative that feels both refined and forward-looking. Alongside the striking Piaget Polo 79, the recent unveiling also reveals Piaget Polo Date variations in blue signature dials and a glamorous pair of Piaget Polo watches in signature steel dials, each offering a distinct interpretation of the collection’s evolving identity.
Piaget’s early years were shaped by the idyllic scenery of La Côte-aux-Fées, a village nestled in the Swiss Jura mountains. It was there that Georges-Edouard Piaget, led by his passion for watchmaking, built his first workshop in 1874 and laid the foundation for the industry titan. Working through long winters under clear northern skies, his dedication to precision quickly set the tone for generations to come. One of its landmark innovations, the ultra-thin movement, was introduced in the 1950s, establishing a legacy of precision and elegance that continues to define Piaget today. This pursuit of slender refinement would soon become one of the Maison’s most celebrated signatures. Not long after, another great discovery was made that would change the trajectory of the brand, the birth of the Piaget Polo, a creation that would boldly challenge conventions of its time.
In 1979, during a surge of steel watches, Piaget crafted an entirely gold watch with an unmistakably opulent silhouette. Conceptualised by Yves G. Piaget, the Piaget Polo was a glamorous hybrid that quickly became a status symbol for luxury lifestyle. Its seamless integration of case and bracelet introduced a new design language—one that blurred the lines between jewellery and horology. Its bracelet-like silhouette made it a versatile timepiece that could be worn to various occasions, be it sports events or galas, effortlessly transitioning between the worlds of leisure and sophistication. Once favoured by illustrious names such as Andy Warhol, the haute horologist now draws inspiration from this monumental timepiece in the making of the new Piaget Polo 79.
Reinterpreted for the modern collector, the watch retains its bold identity while embracing subtle contemporary nuances. A first of its kind, the 18-carat white gold watch features a tantalising ornamental stone dial. The 38 mm white gold case acts as the perfect canvas for the enigmatic sodalite dial with polished gadroons, creating a rich interplay between texture, light, and colour. The stellar ornamental stone perfectly hides the 1200P1, Piaget’s ultra-thin self-winding movement that powers the timepiece at a 3Hz frequency, a gentle reminder of the technical prowess that lies beneath its artistic exterior.
In addition to the opulent Piaget Polo 79, the Swiss brand has reimagined the widely-adored Piaget Polo Signature Date and Piaget Polo Signature.
Encapsulated in 42 mm and 36 mm cases respectively, each steel or 18-carat pink gold case attaches itself to an interchangeable metal bracelet or blue rubber strap, offering both versatility and comfort for everyday wear. For select models, Piaget lines precious diamonds along the bezel to contrast the deep-toned dial, introducing a touch of brilliance that enhances the watch’s refined presence. Far more than just a luxury wristwatch, these new novelties are the first of their kind to boast the blue signature dial with the Piaget Polo’s iconic gadroons, a detail that reinforces the collection’s unmistakable visual identity. Naturally, each timepiece is clad with minimalist appliques and hands, as well as the slim date aperture at the 6 o’clock mark, ensuring legibility while maintaining a clean, balanced composition.
Apart from preserving stylistic choices, Piaget seizes this opportunity to revive yet another long-lost tradition once cherished by Yves Piaget himself: the couple’s watch. In recent years, the Maison had entertained the idea of creating the couple’s watch for its 150th anniversary, which it eventually did in 2024, reintroducing the notion of shared elegance through complementary timepieces. This time, the tradition is succeeded by the new pair of timeless Piaget Polo Signature pieces made in steel, designed to resonate with a new generation of collectors. Parting ways from the blue hue of the dial, the new glamorous duo proudly wears their elegant silver signature dials with the gadroons known to the Piaget Polo, offering a softer, more understated aesthetic.
Softening the bluntness of the rounded square dials is a slim minute track that lies just behind the warm-toned hour appliques, which radiate as equally as the timepiece’s hands and date window, creating a harmonious interplay of proportions and light. Much like its diamond-embedded hour appliques, the 36 mm model also features a string of 96 brilliant-cut diamonds on its bezel, elevating its presence with a refined sparkle. The symbol of modern sophistication, available in 36 mm, pairs uncannily well with its beige rubber strap, whilst the 42 mm stands firm with its khaki green rubber strap, each colourway subtly echoing the natural tones that inspire the collection as a whole.
