Rather than simply refining tradition, the manufacture rethinks how such complexity should function in a contemporary context, prioritising usability, durability, and material advancement. The result is a focused yet powerful trio of novelties that demonstrate how mechanical sophistication can evolve without losing its emotional and technical integrity.
At the heart of this evolution is the Perpetual Calendar IWC-ProSet®, a system that introduces a fully synchronised, gear-based architecture. Departing from traditional correctors and multi-step adjustments, the IWC-ProSet® mechanism allows the wearer to move the calendar both forward and backward using a single crown position in an unprecedented level of convenience showcased in mechanical watchmaking.
Powered by the in-house calibre 82665, operating at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz) with a 60-hour power reserve and 10-metre water resistance, the movement integrates a Pellaton winding system reinforced with ceramic components for enhanced durability. The perpetual calendar displays the date, day, month, and four-digit year, alongside IWC’s signature Double Moon™ phase indicator, accurate to within one day over more than a millennium.
This innovation is presented across three versions of the Big Pilot’s Watch. The white ceramic and stainless steel model, as well as the one in full stainless steel, maintain the signature deep blue aesthetic associated with “Le Petit Prince,” while the 18-carat 5N gold case and crown version (IW329602) introduces a striking dark olive green dial for the first time.
Material innovation reaches new heights with the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume®, a limited edition of 250 pieces that pushes the boundaries of luminous technology. Developed by IWC’s experimental division XPL, Ceralume® is a proprietary ceramic compound infused with Super-LumiNova® pigments, allowing the entire case, dial, and strap to absorb light energy and re-emit it as a vivid blue glow for more than 24 hours.
Beneath this striking exterior lies the calibre 52616, a high-end automatic movement operating at 4 Hz with an impressive seven-day (168-hour) power reserve. The movement incorporates a Pellaton winding system with ceramic components for enhanced durability, as well as a perpetual calendar displaying date, day, month, four-digit year, and IWC’s Double Moon® phase indicator, which deviates by just one day even after five centuries. The watch transforms seamlessly from day to night. By day, the watch presents a monochromatic interplay of matt and polished surfaces; by night, it changes form and transforms into a fully luminous instrument.
IWC also launches a new model that combines titanium with the crown-controlled perpetual calendar from Kurt Klaus. The Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar 41 (IW344904) combines the Gérald Genta-derived integrated bracelet design with an execution in titanium for the first time. It features a grade 5 titanium case measuring 41 millimetres in diameter and an integrated titanium bracelet. The bracelet is attached to the case via its middle links, offering excellent ergonomics. As titanium is about 45 percent lighter than steel, the watch feels very comfortable on the wrist.
Inside the titanium case, the IWC-manufactured 82600 calibre is at work. This high-end automatic movement features a Pellaton winding system, which uses movements of the oscillating mass in both directions to wind the watch. Equipped with a 60-hour power reserve, the movement drives the perpetual calendar, which will recognise the different lengths of the months, including leap years. Developed in the early 1980s by IWC’s former head watchmaker, Kurt Klaus, the perpetual calendar is mechanically programmed to account for many of the Gregorian calendar’s irregularities.
Together, these novelties signal a clear direction for IWC Schaffhausen. Rather than treating complications as static achievements, the manufacture approaches them as evolving systems, ones that must adapt to modern expectations of usability, resilience, and design.
