Few actors have risen as quickly—or as thoughtfully—as Paul Mescal. Since his breakthrough performance in “Normal People”, the Irish actor has built a career defined not by spectacle, but by quiet intensity and carefully chosen roles. From portraying William Shakespeare in “Hamnet to stepping into the role of Paul McCartney in the forthcoming four-film cinematic event about The Beatles, Mescal has established himself as one of the most compelling actors of his generation, drawn to stories and characters whose influence extends well beyond the screen.

Long before being named Cartier’s Global Ambassador in 2024, Mescal had already developed an affinity for the Maison, frequently choosing its timepieces for premieres and other defining moments throughout his career. The connection feels instinctive. Like Cartier, whose Privé collection revisits some of the Maison’s most iconic designs with thoughtful restraint, Mescal has built his reputation on authenticity rather than excess—allowing substance, rather than spectacle, to leave a lasting impression.

Someone who believes that objects gather meaning with time, Paul wears the Tortue in Yellow Gold.

Perhaps that is why one of the most revealing moments in our conversation comes as something of a surprise. Despite making a career from portraying deeply emotional characters, Mescal admits that he is “not particularly sentimental about objects”. Instead, he believes that certain pieces simply gather meaning the longer we live with them. Cartier, it seems, is one of those rare exceptions. As the conversation unfolds, he reflects on how the Maison’s timepieces have quietly accompanied many of his defining milestones, proving that the most meaningful objects are often those that become part of our story over time.

Do you have any special memories linked to Cartier and watches?

I have never been particularly sentimental about objects, but I do think certain pieces gather meaning the longer you live with them. They mark time in a way that’s less about urgency and more about presence. In terms of moments in my life, particularly big career moments, Cartier watches have been with me in those big moments.

We see you wear the Tortue watches a lot on the red carpet, what attracts you to the new Tortue?

The Tortue has a softness to it that I find really appealing. There’s something slightly off-centre about the shape which I love. On a red carpet, where everything can feel quite heightened and performative, it’s nice to wear something that feels considered but not loud. It sits comfortably in that space between classic and a bit unexpected. I think I’m drawn to things that feel lived-in, even when they’re new, and the Tortue has that quality.

Paul describes the Tank Normale as something very grounded and timeless.

What is your favourite watch from the Cartier Privé collection?

From the Cartier Privé collection, I’ve always loved the Cartier Tank Normale. There’s something very grounded about it, especially in this platinum, seven-row bracelet execution that quietly echoes a model from 1934. It feels like it belongs in the past in a classic sense and I just love that.
