How Miles Davis Turned a Pilot’s Watch Into a Style Statement
Long before tool watches became fashion statements, Miles Davis was already wearing one on stage. The trumpeter’s Breitling Navitimer ref. 806 Mk5 was as much a part of his look as his tailored suits. Now, to mark the centenary of Davis’ birth, Breitling has unveiled the Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 Tribute to Miles Davis, limited to 500 pieces.
A Trumpeter’s Signature Timepiece
For Davis, style was never separate from artistry. In sharp Italian suits and behind the wheel of exotic sports cars, he commanded attention long before he lifted his trumpet. Bob Dylan once called him his “definition of cool,” in a 1985 interview for Spin Magazine. Davis, characteristically, wasn’t chasing trends. He was setting them, and his Navitimer went right along with him.
Birth of the Cool, Captured in Steel
Davis helped define what became known as “cool jazz,” a sound built on restraint, space and piercing, deliberate notes rather than noise. His 1957 album Birth of the Cool set the tone for decades of reinvention that followed. The Miles Davis Estate frames the watch in the same terms: not a prop, but a genuine expression of individuality. That’s the thread Breitling has tried to capture with this tribute.
What’s New on the B09 Tribute
The new piece houses the hand-wound Breitling Manufacture Calibre B09, a nod to an era before automatic chronographs existed, visible through an open sapphire caseback engraved “One of 500” and “Miles Davis Centennial.”
It retains the 41mm case of the original ref. 806 Mk5, paired with a monochrome reverse-panda dial and vintage-inspired cream Super-LumiNova. The era-appropriate Twin Jet logo, first used to distinguish civilian Navitimers from AOPA editions, completes the period-correct look.
Buyers can choose between a hand-coloured gradient brown calf-leather strap or a newly revived stainless-steel Air Racer bracelet, the rally-inspired style once favoured by musician Serge Gainsbourg.
This isn’t the only Navitimer story making headlines this year. Breitling’s broader 2026 Navitimer Stories campaign has already introduced the Concorde-tribute B01 and the technically ambitious B19 Perpetual Calendar, each tracing the collection’s journey from cockpit instrument to cultural icon.
A Case Built Like a Trumpet Case
The presentation case takes its cues from a traditional trumpet case, complete with a handle and reinforced corners. Inside, a blue lining nods to Davis’ Kind of Blue, with a miniature record and trumpet detail completing the tribute. Collectors can also opt for the Lifetime Club Member Set, a 50-piece box bringing together three case variations in steel, 18k yellow gold and platinum.
Beyond the Watch: Breitling’s Social Club
The launch coincides with news of the first Breitling Social Club, planned for Williamsburg, New York in late 2027. Owners of the Miles Davis tribute will receive a two-year membership, while Lifetime Set buyers gain permanent access.
It signals where Breitling wants the Navitimer conversation to go next: beyond the wrist, into a wider community of collectors and creatives. Davis chose the Navitimer by instinct, the same way he chose his music. Nearly seventy years on, that instinct still defines what makes a watch worth wearing.
