Some awards confirm what a maison already knows about itself. Hublot’s Big Bang 20th Anniversary King Gold Ceramic has just won a Red Dot Award for Product Design, the latest chapter in a story that began not with polish, but with provocation.

Announced on 7 July in Essen, Germany, the recognition came from an international jury of design experts. They singled out the timepiece’s bold architecture and its seamless integration of Hublot’s in-house UNICO movement—a case where performance and design are built as one.

It is a fitting tribute to a watch built on defiance. Back in 1980, Hublot dared to fuse gold with rubber, unsettling a watchmaking world that prized tradition over disruption. By 2005, that same restless instinct produced the Big Bang.

Every screw, every angle, engineered with intent.

Two decades on, the silhouette remains unmistakably its own. The 20th Anniversary King Gold Ceramic doesn’t simply commemorate that milestone; it reinterprets it. Early Big Bang design codes meet contemporary UNICO architecture in a single case, limited to just 250 pieces.

King Gold is where the craft argument truly asserts itself. Hublot’s proprietary alloy carries a warmer, richer tone than conventional pink gold, thanks to an enhanced platinum content developed entirely in-house.

Through the sapphire caseback, the Unico calibre reveals its craft.

Here, it’s finished with a satin case-back and paired with a polished black ceramic bezel. Six H-shaped titanium screws frame the sides, a study in contrast as much as cohesion.

Beneath the dial, the real engineering story unfolds. The UNICO calibre, born in 2010 as Hublot’s first fully in-house movement, has long been the brand’s most technically expressive signature.

This particular iteration, the MHUB1280.20YEARS, brings a self-winding flyback chronograph accurate to within -2/+4 seconds a day. It’s built around a front-facing column wheel and a silicon escapement engineered for resilience.

The crown tells the story — twenty years, one Red Dot.

Five patented innovations sit inside the movement, among them a dual oscillating clutch system and a “zero friction” ratchet wheel blocker. These refinements speak less to spectacle and more to the quiet, obsessive precision watchmaking demands.

Even the oscillating weight carries its own inscription: 22K King Gold, engraved to mark two decades of the Big Bang.

At 43mm and 13.20mm thick, with 10 ATM water resistance, the case is finished with a black structured rubber strap and an 18K King Gold and black-plated titanium deployant clasp — proportions built for presence on the wrist without tipping into excess.

Layer by layer, the anatomy of an icon.

The piece joins a lineage the maison describes, without much exaggeration, as the twenty-first century’s first true watch icon. What the Red Dot jury recognised wasn’t simply a handsome object, but two decades of a brand refusing to let a signature calcify into habit.

As Hublot enters the next chapter of the Big Bang Original and Big Bang Reloaded in 2026, the King Gold Ceramic stands as proof that reinvention, done properly, is its own form of permanence.
