Some watches are designed to be noticed. Others are designed to be read, and Bell & Ross has always belonged firmly to the latter camp. With the new BR-03 GMT Green Lum, however, the French-Swiss watchmaker makes legibility a visual statement, bathing its aviation-inspired GMT in an unmistakable green glow.
Limited to 500 pieces, the latest BR-03 retains the architecture that has made the collection so recognisable. Its dial shifts vertically from black to green, recalling a night sky lit by the Northern Lights and giving the professional instrument an unexpectedly atmospheric quality.
When the Lights Go Down
The green treatment becomes most compelling after dark. Numerals, hour markers and hands are coated with pale green Super-LumiNova® C3, while the 24-hour scale on the bidirectional ceramic bezel is also treated with the same luminous material.
For Bell & Ross, this is not simply a decorative exercise. The brand has long explored photoluminescence in its professional instrument watches, selecting materials for their ability to deliver reliable visibility when conditions become less forgiving.
The C3 compound gives the BR-03 GMT Green Lum its distinctive green afterglow. Its luminous effect can last for approximately 10 hours after exposure to light, turning an otherwise technical feature into one of the watch’s defining visual signatures.
A Watch Made to Cross Time Zones
At its core, the BR-03 GMT Green Lum remains a travel watch. Local time is displayed on the conventional 12-hour scale, while the dedicated GMT hand points towards the 24-hour scale on the rotating bezel to indicate a second time zone.
The bezel adds another layer of practicality by allowing the wearer to track a third time zone. It is a function closely associated with aviation and international travel, where keeping track of different locations is part of the journey rather than an afterthought.
Bell & Ross has been exploring GMT watches since the BR 03-51 GMT Titanium arrived in 2007. The BR-03 GMT Compass followed last year, and the Green Lum now takes the collection in a more atmospheric direction, placing night-time readability at the centre of its personality.
The Instrument Watch, Reimagined
The design remains unmistakably BR-03. Introduced in 2005, the collection translates the visual language of aircraft dashboard instruments into the wrist through its signature “circle within the square” construction.
The 42mm steel case combines polished and satin-finished surfaces, framed by a bidirectional black ceramic bezel. Four exposed screws reinforce the collection’s utilitarian character, while the aviation-inspired hour and minute hands and aircraft-wing-shaped seconds hand add smaller touches of Bell & Ross identity.
Inside, the automatic BR-CAL.303 calibre provides 54 hours of power reserve. Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating protects the dial, while 100-metre water resistance and a choice of black rubber or ultra-resistant synthetic fabric straps keep the watch firmly within professional-instrument territory.
The result is a GMT that treats function and atmosphere as complementary rather than competing ideas. With its Northern Lights-inspired gradient and vivid green lume, the BR-03 GMT Green Lum gives Bell & Ross’s familiar aviation formula a darker, more expressive edge—one that becomes most compelling when daylight fades.
